Their day
Valerio and Maral were married at Borgo Colognola, among the olive groves and fields outside Perugia. The film shows the borgo from above, then steps into the day: the ceremony beneath an arch of white flowers, vows read into the microphone and the exchange of rings, and the couple among stone walls and old wooden doors.
The opening title plays on their names: “The Marvalous Wedding”. It runs over the couple walking back down the aisle as guests, many of them dressed in black, shower them with handfuls: Maral raises her bouquet of white flowers, lace sleeves reaching to her hands, and Valerio laughs beside her. Then getting ready, with Maral and her friends in white robes opening a bottle beneath the trees.
The ceremony takes place on the lawn among the olive trees, wooded hills behind: an arch of white hydrangeas and roses, a wrought-iron bench, an aisle strewn with petals. Maral is walked in between standing guests, in front of the walls of the borgo, and two readings follow one another at the microphone. When it is time for the vows a clear umbrella appears above them, drops beaded on its canopy: Valerio reads from his sheet, Maral laughs, then they hold each other beneath the arch. On the way out they raise their arms together in front of a stone façade with an arched doorway.
The party fills the courtyard of the borgo, with friends singing and dancing: the cake topped with red berries, the toasts, the dancing and the music into the evening, the groom by now in a white dinner jacket. For the evening Maral wears a beaded dress that catches the light; beside the stone basin in the courtyard a bottle of sparkling wine is opened with arms in the air; a table is dressed with embroidered fabrics, green glass bottles and turquoise ceramics.

Live music and a party among the stones
Many of the film’s moments pass through a microphone: the readings and vows on the lawn, Valerio singing and playing the guitar with Maral singing beside him, friends singing into the microphone under the pink lights of the party. In the hall with its wooden beams, guests wave their napkins and a guitarist plays live while the couple dance with their arms raised; later the DJ takes over, with blue light, haze and heart-shaped sunglasses.
There are more informal moments too, both of them dressed in white: they kiss between the leaves of an old iron gate, strings of bulbs glowing behind them, and Valerio sweeps Maral up in his arms on a white gravel road between hedges. By the pool, at the water’s edge with woods behind, she wears a lace robe and holds a glass; he has his shirt open and sunglasses on.

The venue
Borgo Colognola in the film
From the drone, Borgo Colognola sits compact among olive groves and fields in the hills of the Perugia municipality, at the foot of Monte Tezio. Up close the film shows its stonework: façades with arched doorways, old wooden doors, the courtyard with its stone basin, the hall with exposed beams for dinner, the lawn among the olive trees for the ceremony.
