Their day
Edoardo and Gloria, a close-knit couple, were married on 2 July 2022 at Villa di Montefreddo, in the hills around Perugia. It was the day a dream of love came true, with a ceremony full of emotion.
The film opens with the party already in full swing: friends crowded around Gloria, a microphone in their midst, a song sung all together.
Then it goes back to the start of the day. Edoardo straightens his burgundy tie and laces his shoes; at the door, a woman takes his face in her hands. Laid out on a wooden table are silver sandals, long earrings, a garter and the invitation. Gloria’s friends, in pink and gold sequins, laugh as she gets ready and break into applause as she steps out of the house, with a long veil and a bouquet of pink and red flowers.
In church Edoardo waits, smiling, in his pale grey suit. Gloria is walked down the aisle and, at the altar, raises a hand to her face as he looks at her. Then they walk out through the carved wooden doorway, framed with red and pink flowers, among their guests.
Their film also holds the avenue of cypress trees and the harvested wheat fields around the villa, where the final scenes are set. It was a privilege to tell the story of their day and share it with everyone who was there, and everyone who would watch it later.
The venue
Wheat, cypresses and an Italian garden
Villa di Montefreddo first appears from above: a large brick building among cypress trees, harvested fields all around. Then from the ground, as a cream vintage car drives down the white road between two rows of cypresses. In the formal Italian garden, among box hedges, brick pillars topped with flowering urns and a fountain at its centre, Gloria walks with her bouquet and its long ribbons, while Edoardo stands between the hedges, the walls of the villa behind him.
The widest moment is in the fields. In the harvested wheat the two of them walk hand in hand, pause beside a large solitary tree and lie down among the stubble: from the drone they are a white dot on a sweep of gold. The evening
Speeches, candles and strings of lights
The reception is held outdoors. Candles are lit inside tall glass hurricanes beside the white chairs; strings of bulbs run above the tables, against the stone walls. A group of friends read a speech from a sheet of paper, huddled around the microphone, and Gloria’s friends, in gold and silver sequins, have theirs too. The couple listen from their table, in front of a wall of ivy and roses, laughing and applauding.
Then the dance floor: coloured lights, raised arms, Edoardo in his waistcoat among friends singing along. Yet the film doesn’t end at the party. It closes in the fields, in the last of the light, with the two of them walking, small beneath the tree, far from everyone.
