Their day
Sandra and Debbie celebrated their wedding at Casa San Carlo, in the hills of Monteleone d’Orvieto, in the corner of Umbria that borders Tuscany. The film opens from the sky over the stone and brick village stretched along its ridge, then comes down into its lanes, where the two brides walk hand in hand with their bouquets.
The ceremony is held outdoors, with guests on either side of a white aisle and the hills all around; then toasts overlooking the valley, a long table laid in the open air and, at sunset, a walk through tall grass in the golden evening light.
Straight after the flight over the village, in black and white, a little white vintage Fiat is pushed down off a flatbed and driven up the lane to the Casa San Carlo sign. Then getting ready, filmed up close: hair braided with gypsophila and a rose, a lip pencil, the lace gown hanging in the bedroom, buttons fastened one by one down the back. Two small lockets holding old black-and-white photographs are tied to the ribbon of a bouquet.

Vows, a circle and an embrace
The film moves between colour and black and white, and stays close to the ceremony. One bride walks down the cypress-lined drive accompanied by a man, the little Fiat parked behind them; the other waits, seen from behind, her pink bouquet in hand. On red chairs, two little boys in waistcoats laugh together; among the guests, one wipes away a tear while another smiles beneath a wide-brimmed hat.
The rings are exchanged with the hills behind. At another moment the guests form a large circle on the paving stones and close in around the brides in a single embrace; along the white aisle come rice and applause.

The village and the evening
From Monteleone to the table beneath the arches
The brides also stroll through the village of Monteleone d’Orvieto: lanes of brick and cobbles, an archway open to the valley, a terrace with a stone parapet and the countryside all around. A woman with a walking stick passes along the street, another waves from a window with green shutters, and the film keeps them in the frame.
Beside the stone farmhouse, the long table is laid in the open air, pink flowers down the centre and the valley beyond; the guests gathered round it applaud. In the evening the party moves beneath the brick arches by candlelight: the brides dancing in front of their guests, then everyone dancing, a little boy pulling faces between the candles.
