Their day
Iago and Benedetta were married in Assisi. The film opens on a glowing light bulb, its filament shaped into the word “Love”, then takes them out onto a terrace above the valley in a soft haze, the wind lifting the veil over their heads.
Getting ready begins in a white bedroom. Instant photos are scattered across the bed and Benedetta picks them up, smiling; then, button by button, the long row down the back of her dress is fastened, the fabric embroidered with raised flowers. Iago gets ready in a house full of paintings and antique furniture: the white shirt, the cuffs, a little girl in pink whom he lifts up and kisses.
The church is built of stone, with brick arches, a rose window and shafts of light falling from the windows: the exchange of rings at the altar, the kiss, the celebrant’s smile. As they leave, a violin plays on the threshold while the couple step out towards a square full of guests, and a shower of petals greets them between arrangements of white flowers and pampas grass.
Then the town itself: the lower square of the Basilica of Saint Francis at sunset, among the arcades and the pink stone, to a kiss in front of the basilica. The reception is held in a white room filled with flowers and light, where the couple raise their glasses with their guests.

In Assisi it is the light that sets the pace. In the film the lower square is busy with people passing through; Iago and Benedetta cross it hand in hand while the portal of the basilica glows warm behind them. At sunset the sun drops behind a line of cypresses and the valley turns to gold; the couple hold each other with the arcades behind them.

The celebration
White flowers, violins and lights
The whole reception speaks one language: white. Orchids and pampas grass stand on the tables, the seating plan is framed by strings of lights, and Benedetta’s bouquet pairs orchids with baby’s breath. The couple dance on a stage in front of stone arches, the violins playing a few steps away.
Then the tempo changes. Guests twirl white napkins above their heads, friends laugh around the table, two small children play on the steps. After dark the couple walk out among white roses under a canopy of fairy lights, Benedetta holding her bouquet high. The film closes on the two of them looking up at the sky, the veil still caught by the wind.
