Their day
Arturo and Susanna were married in Perugia, on a rainy day the film turns into poetry. Clear umbrellas, the Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the wet steps of Piazza IV Novembre: the old town becomes the set of a romantic story.
The ceremony takes place in the Sala dei Notari of the Palazzo dei Priori, beneath its frescoed arches and full of guests; outside, rice is thrown on the steps. Then the reception at Castello di Santa Petronilla, the Neo-Gothic residence in the hills of Perugia built by the painter Lemmo Rossi Scotti: a white hall and flowers, speeches, embraces and the cake cutting between fountains of light.
On set
Rain as the thread of the story
In the opening seconds, after the couple under their umbrella, a grey sky fills the screen, crossed by a flock of birds, and the film’s title appears: Il mio sole in un giorno di pioggia, my sunshine on a rainy day. The rain becomes the colour of the story: drops on a clear umbrella, the gleaming paving of the piazza, a single drop bouncing off the water in close-up.
Getting ready is all window light and small gestures: the veil arranged with care, bridesmaids in powder-blue gowns, a bouquet of white and blush roses filmed a few centimetres from the lace of the dress. Later, close to Susanna’s face, the film holds for a moment on a book: La felicità nei giorni di pioggia, happiness on rainy days.
In the old town, Susanna climbs the steps of the Palazzo dei Priori beside a white Volkswagen Beetle convertible, her bridesmaids around her. In the Sala dei Notari she reads from a card, before Arturo and the guests seated beneath the arches; at the door she raises her bouquet to everyone waiting outside, among rice and soap bubbles.

The celebration
Up in the hills, at Santa Petronilla
From the old town the film climbs into the hills: the drone finds Castello di Santa Petronilla among cypresses and olive groves, with the valley and the mountains behind it under low cloud. Inside the white marquee, with its chandeliers and long tables dressed in pale flowers, the couple walk in to applause as Susanna lifts her bouquet.
This part of the film is built on voices: speeches at the microphone against white drapes, then the embraces, one long and close, another between Susanna and a bridesmaid. In between, in a room of the castle, Susanna is filmed beside a statue in the light from a window.
The film has its music too: a live band with trombone, double bass and a singer at a vintage microphone, among soap bubbles and raised phones. After dark come sparklers held up by the guests, the cake cut in front of a great doorway and dancing under coloured lights. The final scene is a dip and a kiss in the middle of the room, with the guests applauding around them.
